Read to self is an activity where students read from individual book boxes catered to their reading level. In the beginning of the year, most students are taking "picture walks" looking at the pictures and vocalizing what they think is going on in the book. As they emerge as readers they are encouraged to look for sight words and blend three letter CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. The goal for the year is a minimum of 15 minutes of independent reading. Here is a series of photos of children keeping their eyes in the book, sounding out words, taking picture walks, and making meaning from pictures.
